Job

Old Testament · Wisdom / Poetry · Traditionally attributed to Unknown · 42 chapters

Job is the Bible's profound meditation on innocent suffering. A blameless and prosperous man loses his children, wealth and health in a single stroke, unknown to him the result of a heavenly wager over whether he serves God for gain.

Most of the book is poetry: Job's anguished protests, the well-meaning but wrong arguments of his three friends that he must have sinned, and finally God's own answer out of the whirlwind — not an explanation, but an overwhelming vision of the Creator's wisdom and power. Job does not solve the problem of suffering so much as reframe it, calling for trust in a God whose ways exceed our understanding.
