Joel

Joel seizes on a devastating locust plague as a warning of the coming 'day of the Lord' — a day of judgement that summons the nation to repentance: 'Rend your hearts and not your garments' (2:13). The prophet calls for fasting and prayer in the face of disaster.

Beyond the warning comes a great promise: God will restore the years the locusts have eaten, and will pour out his Spirit 'on all flesh' so that sons and daughters prophesy (2:28–29) — the passage Peter quotes at Pentecost as fulfilled in the birth of the church.
