ScholarlyCleopas (Greek Kleopas) is generally understood as a shortened form of the Greek name Kleopatros, meaning roughly 'of a renowned father' or 'glory of the father.'
Greek onomastics; Kleopas as a hypocoristic contraction of Kleopatros.
ScholarlyScholars debate whether the Greek-named Cleopas of Luke is the same man as the Semitic-named Clopas of John 19:25; the two names are linguistically distinct, so any identification rests on inference rather than the texts themselves.
