ScholarlyBecause 3 John says Diotrephes "loves to be first" and expels members who welcomed traveling missionaries, some scholars (notably Adolf von Harnack) read him as an early monarchical bishop asserting local authority against itinerant apostolic emissaries. This remains a contested reconstruction, not an attested fact about the man.
