Deuteronomy

Deuteronomy ('second law') is Moses' farewell — a series of sermons delivered on the plains of Moab as Israel prepares to cross the Jordan without him. He rehearses their history, restates the Law, and calls the new generation to wholehearted love and obedience.

Its heart is the Shema, 'Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one' (6:4), and its structure of covenant blessing and curse shapes the rest of Israel's story. The most quoted book in the New Testament after Psalms and Isaiah, Deuteronomy closes the Torah with Moses' death and the promise of a prophet to come.
