By strong and ancient tradition, the apostle Thomas carried the gospel farther east than any other — through Mesopotamia and Persia to India, where the St Thomas Christians of Kerala trace their church to him.

  2. Edessa · c. AD 40s — Preaches in Mesopotamia (the Abgar tradition)
  3. Babylon · c. AD 40s — Eastward through the Parthian lands
  4. Taxila · c. AD 48 — Meets King Gondophares in the north-west, by tradition
  5. Muziris · c. AD 52 — Lands on the Malabar coast; founds churches in Kerala
  6. Mylapore · c. AD 72 — Martyred near modern Chennai
