Jerusalem

City / town · Modern: Jerusalem · Judea

The holy city set in the Judean hills — David's capital and the site of Solomon's Temple, its destruction by Babylon in 586 BC and rebuilding after the exile, and the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus. No city is named more often in the Bible.

ArchaeologyNahman Avigad's Jewish Quarter excavations uncovered the 'Broad Wall', a 7-metre-thick fortification matching Isaiah 22:10 and Nehemiah 3:8, while Eilat Mazar's Ophel dig exposed a monumental 'Large Stone Structure' argued to be part of David's palace — its date and identification are debated.
