ScholarlyThe identity of this companion is entangled in a textual variant: while most manuscripts read 'Gaius of Derbe' in Acts 20:4, Codex Bezae (D) and some witnesses read 'Douberios' ('of Doberus', a Macedonian town), and commentators debate whether 'of Derbe' modifies Gaius or the Timothy named next to him. This bears on whether he was a South-Galatian or a Macedonian delegate carrying the collection to Jerusalem.
