ScholarlyAbiud appears only in Matthew's post-exilic genealogy of Jesus and has no counterpart in the Old Testament or in the parallel Davidic list of 1 Chronicles 3, which names different descendants of Zerubbabel. The source Matthew drew on for these otherwise-unattested names is unknown and much discussed by scholars.

ScholarlyThe Greek Abioud (Ἀβιούδ) transliterates the Hebrew Abihud, abi ('my father') plus hod/hud ('majesty, glory, splendour'), meaning 'my father is majesty.' The same Hebrew name is borne by an unrelated Benjaminite in 1 Chronicles 8:3.
