Matthew
Matthew's Gospel presents Jesus as the promised Messiah and King, the fulfilment of Israel's Scriptures. Written especially for a Jewish-Christian readership, it repeatedly shows how the events of Jesus' life 'fulfil what was spoken by the prophets', and opens with a genealogy tracing him to Abraham and David.
It gathers Jesus' teaching into five great discourses, the first and greatest being the Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5–7). From the visit of the wise men to the Great Commission — 'Go therefore and make disciples of all nations' (28:19) — Matthew is the bridge between the Testaments and the church's most-used Gospel.
