Name & titles
ScholarlyThe person Haran, son of Terah and father of Lot, is spelled in Hebrew with an initial he (Hārān, הָרָן) and must not be confused with the northern Mesopotamian city Harran/Ḥārān (חָרָן), which begins with heth and is a distinct word. The rich archaeological and textual record of the city of Harran, a major cult centre of the moon-god Sin, attests the place, not this individual.
Hebrew philology distinguishing personal name Hārān (initial ה) from the toponym Ḥārān (initial ח); the two are unrelated despite the English homograph.
